Faculty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is a rapidly developing faculty of the TSMU that aims to prepare competent specialist ensuring medical care and rehabilitation of patients who has been disabled as a result of a chronic disease, disorder, injury or other clinical problem.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is a dynamic and challenging health profession dedicated to improving and maintaining physical mobility, independence, health and well-being. Modern rehabilitation medicine is a crucial component to effective health care, and like many disciplines within health care, is often a calling for the strongest professionalism and permanent knowledge update.
The Faculty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation was established in 2007 by decision of the Academic Board of TSMU.
Since 2008 faculty provides up-to-date Bachelor degree program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of European standards, and further it has been developing according to the European Region World Confederation of Physical Therapy Competencies Guidance document (2018). During four years students acquiring knowledge in various departments of basic and clinical sciences, work in primary care facilities, variety of clinical settings of the university and affiliated with the university. They study rehabilitation principles and programs, organization of the rehabilitation services, modern rehabilitation methods and technologies, and their application in rehabilitation of musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, neurological, respiratory diseases and disorders, across all ages.
In 2009 first Master’s degree program in “Pediatric Rehabilitation” was introduced on the faculty and three other Master’s programs – “Advisor in Rehabilitation”, “Sports Rehabilitation”, and “Biomedical Engineering” has been accredited and launched in subsequent years.
For the past 10 years Faculty is closely connected with its partner universities in Europe and in the USA. Furthermore, American colleagues are teaching on the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation faculty and are involved in the research projects of the faculty.
In 2007 the Department of Nursing Education was established as an integral part of the Faculty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and (coordinator Medea Jgharkava).
In 2015 the Georgian-Austrian Nursing Educational BC Program as a product of collaboration between TSMU and TILAK - Tiroler Landeskrankenanstalten GmbH, Innsbruck, Austria, started on the Faculty and currently is successfully developing with involvement of the both Georgian and Austrian institutions.
