30 years since the events of April 9

Thirty years have passed since the tragic events of 9 April 1989, when the Soviet army used tanks and poisonous gas to rout out the peaceful demonstration of several thousand participants supporting the independence of Georgia. The Tbilisi State Medical University dedicated several events to the date. Students visit to the Museum of History of Medicine was organized by the Students and Alumni Relationship Department and Student Self-Government. The seminar was dedicated to the events taking place 30 years ago, led by Ramaz Shengelia TSMU Professor of the Department ofMedicine History and Bioethics. Among the guests were: Irakli Menagharashvili – Former Minister of Health in 1989; Avtandil Jorbenadze Former Deputy Head of City Council Executive Health Care Committee; Otar Zurabishvili - Head of “Georgian Refugee Community in France," who provided proper information to the  European people about the tragedy taking place in Tbilisi; Mamuka Giorgadze  former political secretary of the National Democratic Party; Vice-Rectors: Prof. Rima Beriashvili,   Associate Prof. Irakli Kokhreidze and other special guests. Mr. Menagarishvili talked about the tragic event in 1989 and noted that the doctors were fulfilling their duty honestly.  They saved thousands of poisoned citizens of Georgia. Mr.Zurabishvili and Mr. Giorgadze also spoke about the tragedy. Later, the guests visited the Museum of History of Medicine and highly appreciated the presented expositions. On the same day representatives of TSMU: Vice-Rector, Associate Professor Irakli Kokhreidze, Head of Students and Alumni Department, Mikheil Diakonidze and the President of Student Self-Government, Ana Kakabadze visited the Memorial dedicated to the tragedy and laid flowers at  the memorial. According to  Prof. Irakli Kokhreidze April 9 is a sacred date for all Georgian citizens; the Tbilisi State Medical University has always been appreciating merit of the heroes struggling for independence of Georgia. "We will never forget them and young generation will attempt to stand by the side of our nation as the heroes of 1989” said Ana Kakabadze President of Student Self-Government.
